OCTOBER BLOG: DAY 5

They aren’t all winners.

As part of Sober October, I’ve committed myself to shooting and writing every day. This is a challenge. It isn’t that I don’t love photography or writing. I love both of those things. The problem is inspiration. It would be great if I woke up every day with an epic shoot planned or some sort of dissertation on the human condition. And while I do have a couple of epic shoots planned in the next couple of months, it just isn’t feasible on a regular schedule. Similarly, not every thought out of my head is genius. …just every other thought.

To illustrate this, I thought I would show a couple of the images I haven’t shown and the thought behind them.

This day one image doesn’t make a lot of sense to anyone, except me. A lot of what makes great photography is details. I took this shot with the intent of showing the least noticed part of the sword: it’s guard. I like the shot, but I can’t help but think this is only interesting to me.

Day two involved a lot of self-portraits. Like in the previous image, what interests me are the details. The Sigma 85 Art is so sharp you can see the tiny bits of straw on the brim of my hat. This wasn’t posted because I was worried it looked too pretentious.

This image just doesn’t work. I was going for a “face in the crowd” concept. The black Tron figure is meant to be the focus. I probably could have just rearranged the other figures to make the emphasis more obvious.

This is today’s image. The first one where I left the house post-virus. Someone put up one of those “little library” posts in a park and it caught my eye. Anything that encourages reading is a good thing. I actually went and added a book to the library.

Going forward, I plan to keep shooting every day, but I don’t think I’ll be posting all of them to my instagram feed. The reason being that I need to curate my feed for people who aren’t familiar with my work. Random shots don’t do me any favors. If you want to keep up with it, I’ll be posting the images here in the daily blog posts.
