Who Do You Want to Be?

In my last post, I explained that I was cleansing my life of it’s excesses- selling, donating or trashing a large chunk of my belongings. The sell pile includes comics, posters, statues, toys and the like.

People keep asking “why are doing that? Don’t you love all those things?”

And I absolutely do. I unabashedly love comics and collectibles. You can’t understate the importance these things over the course of my life. Here’s the thing though- comics may have shaped my life, but they aren’t my life. If you look around my room, you’ll see all kinds of books, posters, movies and collectibles. However if you look at my desk, what you will see is framed photos of the people I love- mostly images I took myself.

My godson.

My godson.

Its good to have interests and possessions that are important to you. But don’t let those things become your life. When you take your world and fill it with things, they stop being the spice that makes your life worthwhile and becomes something that merely fills the empty spaces of your life.

Who do you want to be? Do you want to be the Sports Guy? Or the Nerd Girl? Or the Film Nerd? Or would you rather be a great friend, an adventurous spirit and a loving Father? When you die and people look at the things surrounding your life, will they see a bunch of movie posters, or will they see a life well-spent, filled with people that loved you?

So yeah. I still love those things. I just don’t need them hanging on every wall.
