Why I’m Going Back to Apple…

Before I even get started with this, let me be clear. I can’t stand the Apple/Mac vs PC/ Android arguments. Brand loyalty is the worst part of consumerism. It often leads to corporations putting out inferior products, knowing that their fans will buy whatever they put out.

That said…

My current plan is to buy all Apple products. Let me explain.

I swapped my iPhone 6s for the Pixel 3XL. As a photographer, I always want the best camera I can have on me at all times. At the time, the Pixel’s camera was outshining the iPhone.

I built my own desktop computer in 2020. I spent two months doing research and buying the parts I want for the build.

I gave away my old iPad Mini, because it was obsolete and I couldn’t run Lightroom Mobile. I bought a cheap android tablet to replace it.

So cut to today.

I am not a “Windows/ Android guy” choosing to become an “Apple guy”. Each of my decisions is based on my needs and genuine knowledge on the subject.

Because of planned obsolescence, my 3 year old Pixel is showing its age. The Pixel 6 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are getting similar reviews in terms of camera quality. However, the long term reviews of the Pixel aren’t encouraging. That said, I would normally hold onto my current Pixel for a while longer. It still has life in it and the 3 basic models of the iPhone 13 don’t have a much better camera than my current phone. The iPhone Pro Max, however, looks way better from my initial testing.

My desktop is still an outstanding computer. My decision to buy a Mac Mini comes down to my choices to downsize my life. Mac Minis these days are very powerful and take up virtually no space. If a hurricane comes along, I can literally toss it in my backpack. Of all my choices, this is probably the least necessary.

The android tablet I bought sucks. It has never been a good device, but then again it only costed about $150. You can’t expect much for that. The iPad Air that I bought is much more expensive, but damn if that thing doesn’t run. The reality is that the iPad has always been the best option for tablets. Sure, the Surface Pro is a great device, but it is cost prohibitive if you aren’t using it for professional reasons. Which I am, but I still don’t need it.

I left Apple behind because at the time the company was making choices with their devices that I disagree with. Lately, they’ve been doing better. Windows has been solid for several years now. So has Android. There is no reason not to buy products that run them, And I am still a big believer in building your own desktop.

Windows 11 is pretty cool as well. In fact, I won’t be totally abandoning PC’s. My ASUS laptop is pretty solid. I’m keeping it. I’m even upgrading the drive and the RAM this week.

Do your research. Buy the devices that work best for you. Ignore band loyalty.
